Coimbra occupies a hillside above the Mondego river with a particular gravity that comes from nine centuries of uninterrupted academic life. The University of Coimbra — founded in 1290 — is Portugal's oldest institution. Its Joanina Library, a baroque interior of carved wood and painted ceiling housing 300,000 volumes, is arguably the most beautiful room in Portugal. Coimbra also gave birth to one of Portugal's two distinct fado traditions — a student tradition of black capes, guitar and medieval melody that has survived largely unchanged.
